Determine What To Keep And What To Throw Away When Moving In Ventura County

It’s a painful, often very emotional, undertaking, but it usually has to be done when you get ready to move. And that is getting rid of your precious stuff. But you can’t just take a bulldozer approach because you’ll wind up getting rid of things you need or that have other value to you. So how do you do it? The trick lies in determining exactly what to keep and what to throw away when moving in Ventura County. Here are some tips to help you.

Determine Value

When you consider whether to keep or get rid of an item when moving in Ventura County, you should try to determine its value to you. This doesn’t necessarily mean financial value, but rather its sentimental value and/or practical use value. Really, whether an item is valuable or worthless depends almost entirely on your perception of it. Here, then,  are some measures by which you can determine value:

  • Do you use it frequently or just hang on to it out of force of habit?
  • Is it convenient, making your life more comfortable or easier?
  • Is it in good condition, functioning well and serving its intended purpose?
  • Is it of high quality and made to last?
  • Will it go well in your new home both functionally and aesthetically?
  • Will you actually use it in your new home (whether you do now or not)?

Some items have absolutely no practical value, but are imbued with a great deal of sentimental value. And these you should keep when moving in Ventura County because of your emotional attachment to them. But here’s a caveat: keep only those things that mean a great deal to you like family heirlooms and irreplaceable keepsakes. Otherwise, you won’t get rid of anything and will wind up moving boxes and boxes of, well, junk.

Last Use Rule

Also, to help you determine what to keep and what to throw away when moving in Ventura County, ask yourself when you used it last. The rule of thumb here is that if you haven’t used it in the last five months, then it should probably go. Of course, the sentimental items we just mentioned likely don’t have any practical uses, but when was the last time you got them out and looked at them. If has been more than five months, well then . . .

You don’t, of course, want to get too overzealous in purging and getting rid of stuff when moving in Ventura County. So it’s a good idea to use the “8:00 am rule” as well. Put everything you don’t use in the throw-away pile, but don’t actually get rid of these things on the same day they go into the pile. Instead, wait till 8:00 am the next day to decide whether you really want to get rid of each of those items. You may change your mind when the morning comes.

Number of Purposes and Functions

Also, in determining what to keep and what to throw away when moving in Ventura County, you should consider how many purposes and functions an item has. If it serves more than one purpose, then maybe you should hang on to it. Consider your teapot, for example. It has basically only one purpose – to heat water for tea or maybe for hot chocolate or instant coffee. But your saucepan can be used to heat water as well as cook food – and with a large spoon, it can be used as an alarm clock in a pinch. So maybe you should jettison the teapot in favor of the saucepan.
